Tyre FAQs

If we have not answered your question then please contact us on 0161 428 7578 for a no obligation chat:

I can’t find my tyres?
We have thousands of tyre specifications listed on our website. One common problem for not finding the tyre is that Customer thinks the "R" on their tyres is the speed rating. The "R" on your tyre means radial. For advice on finding the correct tyre choice, please call one of our advisors 0161 428 7578.

The speed rating can be a T, H, V, ZR, Z, Y or W. The marking is located on the side wall of your tyre after the size and load rating. Example of markings 205/65 R 15 94V or 225/40 ZR 18 92W

What is the speed rating?
The speed rating is marked on the side of the tyre and indicates the maximum speed at which the tyre can carry the load corresponding with its load index. Example 94V.
The most common ratings are shown below, with the less common ones in the box below.
"T" rated tyres are designed to carry their load up to 118 MPH
"H" rated tyres are designed to carry their load up to 130MPH
"V" rated tyres are designed to carry their load no faster than 150 MPH
"W" are designed to go faster than 150 MPH but no faster then 169 MPH
"Y" are designed to go faster than 150 MPH but no faster then 186 MPH
"W" & "Y" ratings usually appear with the ZR rating.

The legal limit for the tread of the tyre is 1.6mm across ¾ of the tread pattern. Your tyre should be replaced if any of the following defects are visible:
If the tread is less that 1.6mm.
If the tyre has any bald patches.
If the internal construction of the tyres is visible.
If the sidewall of the tyre bulges anywhere.
If the tyre is split.
If the tyre has extensive cracking or the rubber is perishing, (usually on older tyres.)
If the tyre is not the same size as the one on other side of the axle.
How do you balance the wheels?
We use the latest electronic balancing equipment, capable of balancing 10" to 22" diameter wheels. All the balance weights used are made from zinc and comply with current legislation. For alloy wheels we use adhesive weights only and fit the weights to the inside of the wheel so as not to spoil the appearance.

We can repair your puncture if it safe to do so. All repairs are done under British Standard guidelines BSAU 159. If the puncture is in the shoulder or side-wall of the tyre it cannot be repaired

Tracking Alignment
One thing which many people misunderstand and think is included is "Tracking". This is a mechanical adjustment of the steering to make sure that the front wheels of the vehicle are correctly aligned. This setting is not affected when we remove your wheels and replace your tyres. Misalignment is one of the main contributors to premature tyre wear often proving worse on the inner or outer edges of the front tyres. Stewart Wilson do not adjust a vehicles alignment / tracking. Although we do not carry out alignment /tracking adjustments, all our technicians are able to advise you whether, in their opinion, your alignment / tracking is set in correctly and the best course of action to take.

Why should you check your tyres?
Did you know that you are not insured when driving on illegal tyres? Worn tyres significantly reduce the performance of your car. Low tread depths reduce the effectiveness of braking, steering, and acceleration, all of which are vital in staying safe.

What should you check?
The Tyre Industry Council five point tyre check:

1. Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls.
2. Check tyre tread depth.
3. Check all tyre pressures.
4. Check signs of irregular wear, i.e. alignment.
5. Check and examine the spare tyre.

Tyre Pressures
A tyre can be under inflated without looking flat. To be safe you should check the pressures once a fortnight. To find out what pressure your tyres should be at please refer to your Vehicle Manual. Remember that tyre pressures should only be checked when your tyres are cold - a good guideline is to leave them for an hour to cool down before checking. You must not drive on under or over inflated tyres as this will impede your vehicle's handling, in most cases making the vehicle unstable. The wrong tyre pressure will increase tyre wear.

What happens if I do not have the Key for my Locking Wheel Nuts?
